Colorado National Monument
Reached from Fruita or Grand Junction via SR 340, Colorado National Monument is seamed with canyons more than 500 feet deep. Unusual formations created by erosion are evident throughout the 20,454-acre region. Isolated monoliths include Independence Monument, Balanced Rock, Coke Ovens and Pipe Organ. Rim Rock Drive skirts the edges of the canyons; the roadway can be quite narrow. Juniper and pinyon pine comprise the chief forest cover; yucca and other wildflowers grace the area in spring. Camping and picnicking areas, self-guiding nature trails and longer hiking paths are available. Back-country camping requires a permit, available free at the visitor center. Allow 2 hours, 30 minutes minimum. Daily 24 hours. Entrance fee $5 per private vehicle or $3 per person arriving by other means (valid for 7 days). Annual permits $15. Camping $10.
